Whilst the 2016 vintage is a boon for Châteauneuf generally, there is one producer of historical pedigree which has produced maybe the wine of the vintage. That is Château Mont-Redon. With a vineyard site that dates to 1344!
By now it's pretty much common knowledge that the 2016 vintage in the Southern Rhône generally and Châteauneuf-du-Pape in particular is one of the best in living memory, if not the best ever.
Whilst the 2016 vintage is a boon for Châteauneuf generally, there is one producer of historical pedigree which has produced maybe the wine of the vintage. That is Château Mont-Redon. With a vineyard site that dates to 1344, Mont-Redon is situated on a large swathe of the best terroir in the appellation. Its modern history really dates to the 1920s and by the 1960s it was one of the stars of the region. And this new vintage is getting some commentators just a little bit wistful, here's what the leading authority on Rhone, John Livingstone-Learmonth had to say about this wine:
“Very dark robe, more black-purple than dark red. The bouquet is dense, unwavering, on a thorough black jam paste aroma, a super coulis of blueberry, nudges of black olives lurking. The palate is stylish, very filled, has salted threads along the way,the flavour one of bold black fruits with a sealed, always smooth, oily, gummy texture. This has enormous richness, fantastic length, is a very dense orb, with the tannins showing some spark and spice, tar, towards the close. It will live extremely well, has the balance and size of this remarkable vintage. A magnum would be amazing. This takes me back to the glory days of the 1960s here."
