Bernard Baudry Les Granges Chinon Cabernet Franc 2018
Les Granges comes mostly from the Estate's younger vines (15- to 20-plus years old) planted on the alluvial, gravel soils of the terraces by the river Vienne. The grapes are picked by hand, fermentation is at cool temperatures and maturation occurs in a mix of concrete and large wooden vats.
"This is simply astonishing. The first clue is the colour, opaque, the wine eagerly coating the inner surface of the glass. The nose is all sun-dried summer fruits and confit blackcurrants, which continues through onto the palate as a creamed substance, dark and toasted. There are dense fruit complexities here, of black plum, damson, black olives and violets, all wrapped up in a velvety and creamed finish. It has some length too, and also acidity. An exceptional vintage for Les Granges, "Grézeaux level" says Matthieu, and I would not disagree with him; this is the most striking Les Granges I have ever encountered." 93 points, Chris Kissack, The Wine Doctor
